You can't grow strong healthy hair if your scalp is out of wack.  But it's the truth.  A healthy balanced scalp is the end all and be all when it comes to growing your best hair.  Why?  Because the scalp is where the hair follicles (root)s reside and they are what create your hair.

Scalp Anatomy Diagram

In case you didn't know, the scalp is a part of the largest organ on your body - the skin.  It has pores, sweats, and regulates your body temperature just like the skin on other parts of your body.  And, just like the rest of your skin it has to be nurtured to prevent dryness, scaliness (dandruff), and irritation. We protect the skin (scalp) by making sure it's balanced. If your scalp isn't balanced then your hair follicles will start to shrink resulting in possible alopecia.

So what is balanced?

Balanced simply means that the scalp's natural environment has the proper pH, is free of excess sebum, free of injury, free of inflammation; and free of bacteria and fungus.  Let's go over each of these.

  • When we say pH Balanced we are referring to the scalps acid/alkaline level.  The scalp prefers to be in the acidic range around 3.87- 5.5 depending on the person. To far out of this range and you run the risk of developing dryness or bacteria on your scalp.
  • Excess Sebum can be genetic or from internal causes.  Usually the oilier your scalp the stronger your hair strands but too much sebum can clog your scalp pores and increase yeast and bad odor.  Again this is a potential cause for dandruff and even seborrheic dermatitis.
  • Bumps, scars, and infections on your scalp can cause hair loss due to follicle injury.
  • Inflammation in the scalp is a major culprit for hair loss.  Inflammation is a sign of your body being out of wack. It's the natural reaction to infection or injury. When present your scalp my be red, irritated, itchy, or even painful. Chronic inflammation in the scalp can cause your hair follicles to shrink and scar over resulting in the inability to produce more hair.
